What is intellectual property?
Intellectual property is a type of intangible property, that is something which is not physical. So for a piece of writing, for example, there are two types of property that are capable of existing. There is the physical property, which includes the paper and ink used to print/write the piece and there is the intangible property relating to the ideas contained in the work and particular literary style used by the author.
Intellectual property (IP) rights
IP rights are varied and complex and include:
- Copyrights – a type of right which automatically comes into existence for original works of an artistic nature, which includes ‘pure’ artworks such as paintings and sculptures, literary works, web copy, databases and even computer code.
- Trademarks – a type of right which can either be registered or unregistered and is designed to protect certain word usage, logos, images, sounds and even smells associated with a particular company or brand.
- Patents – a type of right which comes into existence after an application is made to the relevant patent offices and is designed to protect inventions and technical processes which are unique as verified by a technical expert in a particular industry.
- Design rights – a type of right which protects original designs relating to three dimensional rather than two dimensional objects.
